Adrian, Michigan

Adrian ,county seat of Lenawee County, is centrally located at the junction of US-223 and M-52, about 10 miles north of the Ohio state line. It has a broad economic base, supported by industries such as auto-parts manufacturing, plastics, aluminum and brass forging, as well as furniture production, health care and office products. It is also the home of Adrian and Siena Heights Colleges. The downtown area has retained much of its historic architecture, giving it a distinct turn-of-the-century look.

The South Branch of the River Raisin runs through town and two city parks.

Adrian was first settled in 1826 by Adrian J. Comstock, a settler from New York who named the town Logan, (probably after a town in New York, although historical records are uncertain). It was officially organized as a village in 1836. In 1838, Comstock’s wife persuaded him to rename it after Roman Emperor Hadrian, her hero; (Hadrian was noted for the personal attention he gave to the provinces, and for organizing Roman Law into a uniform code). After approval by the Michigan Legislature, it was renamed Adrian. It was eventually organized as a city in 1853.
